Thanksgiving is just a piece of the puzzle; it gets even more interesting when we combine the seasonality of Christmas week into the equation.

There have been three 50% S&P500 Bear Markets in the last 50 years: 1973-74, 2000-02 and 2008. Thanksgiving week performance was negative in 1973, 1999 and 2007. This year, US Thanksgiving Thursday is on Nov 23rd and we naturally would prefer at least a positive week and ideally one with a 2% pop.
